How To Market And Sell Your Digital Photographs:

How To Market And Sell Your Digital Photographs:

Today I would like to share a quick tip, on one of the ways, I market and sell my digital photographs. It seems like digital photography has opened the door for anyone who has a desire to learn how to take high quality photographs. Learning photography is much easier than it has been in the past. New technology, especially in digital cameras and image editing software, has enabled anyone, with a strong desire to be a photographic artist, to achieve outstanding results. With this in mind we are seeing a multitude of people wanting to sell their best images, without any idea how to get started.

Marketing or selling anything requires a lot of work, and in most instances a substantial investment. That is where Red Bubble comes into play. I've recently found this fantastic website and started utilizing their service. Red Bubble is a great place to network with other photographers and artists. You can upload and sell your images on Red Bubble at no charge. Red Bubble gets a lot of traffic and this traffic could mean money in your pocket. But even more importantly you'll get feedback from other members, exposure to some fantastic art work and a ton of positive exposure.

A word of caution, be sure you only submit your best work. Red Bubble only accept hi quality, hi rez files, preferably around 50 or 60 meg files are prefered. So don't shoot yourself in the foot and upload just any old shot. Make sure it's your best work because other members will be viewing and commenting on your submissions. You don't want to be embarrased, so be selective.
This is just one of the many resources available for making money money selling your digital photos, but is definitely a great place to start. Remember there no out of pocket expense, and free is a very good price.

In addition to Red Bubble I've also found Turn Your Photos Into Cash a very good tool forselling your digital photos online. This is an excellent course and will also make your efforts much easier.
Oh, by the way, Red Bubble also provideds you with a wide selection of free sales tools to help you promote and market your images to the public. Below is an example of one of the sales widgets I am currently using to promote my Red Bubble site submissions.

I'll be taking my Canon EOS 5D and a ton of memory in hopes of shooting a few winners in HDR. So stop back and see me about the middle of August and I will have some shots posted for your viewing pleasure.

Till then, Terry

PS: if you have any shots you would like to share i'd be happy to post them here with name credit. Maybe you'll generate some interest or even a sale or two.

Tip #1 Selling Your Photos Online!

This article is part of an ongoing series in which you will learn about the basics of stock photography, the license types, what to submit and how to make money off stock photography.
I’ll also cover a few insider and marketing tips that will help you get accepted and simply create better stock photos.

Simply put, stock photography is a collection of photos that can be used for different purposes under strict or relatively flexible usage licenses. Stock photos include an ever expanding variety of subjects which publishers, advertising agencies or anyone can buy and use.

1. What is Stock Photography?
Stock photography simply works because the end user who needs photos can save time and money by not hiring a photographer. If photographers and their portfolio websites could be considered stores then stock photography websites are the supermarkets of images and illustrations.

It’s a win win situation for all parties involved. Stock photography agencies get to keep a percentage of every photo sold on their website, photographers get the remaining percentage and users get the desired photo.

2. Stock or Microstock?
There are two types of stock photography marketplaces, stock (also called macrostock) and microstock photography websites. Let’s look at the difference between these:

1. Stock photography websites are the traditional photography marketplaces where photo prices range from a few dollars and up to thousands of dollars.

2. Microstock agencies are "the new kids on the block" so to speak and in recent years microstock got a lot of coverage and popularity on the Internet, because photography equipment became cheaper and more professional, therefore more and more people could afford to take professional photos with consumer cameras (digital cameras). This article will focus on microstock photography to cover a larger audience of readers, from beginner to advanced photographers and designers who want to get their ‘hands dirty’ in stock photography.

Microstock was the answer for this niche market, where amateur and professional photos can be sold for a really low price, usually anywhere between 1 to 5 dollars. The idea behind microstock is that if the images are cheap enough, more people will buy as opposed to selling at a higher price to a more restricted number of customers (usually agencies with large budgets). The sellers of microstock photos are usually average users. The system allows not only professional photographers, but also beginners to create a portfolio and sell their photos.

You can make some money out of stock photography, but it’s very hard to make a complete living out of it, without the proper training. This is simply because your competition consists of literally tens of millions of other photos in the same marketplace. Let’s do the math, say your photos are sold at roughly $1 per image, and you’d need an average of $100,000 per year to get by, that means that you’d need to sell 100,000 photos per year. If your photos are sold at $1 to $5 dollars a piece, you will only earn a percentage of this, which usually translates to a few cents.

The rate of failed submissions is very high, because stock photo websites are saturated with millions of photos, you either need to submit photos of a completely new, groundbreaking theme or choose a very narrow niche market.

Making Money Selling Your Digital Photos Online: Quick Tips # 1

Are you serious about making money selling your digital photos online? Here is a quick tip on how you can be successful and make more money selling your digital photos online. It isn't enough to just have a digital camera and take a few digital photographs to submit to a stock photo agency. Stock photo agencies are bombarded with, run of the mill, ordinary snapshots every day.

It seems like everyone with a digital camera thinks their digital photographs are great. What they do not realize is the camera can only do so much. The real quality of the image is usually, if not always, created with post processing. Serious photographers use ,Adobe Photoshop, or Adobe Photoshop Elements, to enhance and retouch their photographs.
Even if you think your original digital picture is great, the chances are, it can be improved upon. Perhaps you could give the colors more saturation, or maybe improve the color balance by warming your photograph up a little, by adding a little red or yellow to the color balance. Maybe you need to remove an unwanted object and create a real winning image.

Unless your photograph has been taken under ideal lighting conditions, such as, in a studio, the color balance is probably a little cold. Under a cloudy or overcast sky, most digital photographs have a slightly green or blue cast to them. This should be corrected before submitting them for sale to a stock photo agency. Remember, the better your photographs look, the easier they are to sell. And sales mean more money in your pocket.

Until lately, only dedicated Professional Photographers were willing to put in the effort to learn Adobe Photo-shop. The learning curve is quite steep if you only use a written manual. Especially if you are not fully familiar with the terminology. Remember these manuals were written by computer experts, who are not in touch with the real world, and ordinary people.

Well that has all recently changed with the release of some very good video training lessons for Photo-shop. There are a few programs available for people who are totally new to Photo-shop. In fact some of these lessons are so easy to follow with their, step by step, on screen demonstration. that you can actually learn the basics of how to edit your digital photographs in a matter of just a few hours.

If you are serious about selling your digital photographs on line. Or if you just want to learn how to edit your digital images for fun, I highly recommend that you take a look at one of these new, how to, Photo-shop Video Lessons.

Learn How To Turn Your Digital Photos Into Cash

The most important tool for this digital photo business is of course the digital camera. The quality of the images is down to the mega pixel capacity of the camera and if you want to avoid your photos being rejected by the stock photography sites, you will need at least a 5 mega pixel digital camera, and make sure it is set to the maximum resolution possible.

Never submit more than 50 photos at a time and be careful not to upload the same photo twice, as this will also lead to possible photo rejection and even to account closure. To avoid this happening, don't change the file name as your PC will point out any duplicates, and then when you are have a batch to upload change the file names accordingly. Windows has built in software for multiple file name changes, so it is just a question of a few clicks and won't be a time wasting exercise.

Keywords is basically the second most important factor after qualtiy, so a bit of research will certainly help increase your photo sales. Try using the Google Keyword Tool found here:- https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal#

You can also have a look at similar photos on Google Images, just to see what Keywords the front page images are using, but don't over do it or you will be seen as a spammer. Use between 6 and 10 keywords to get optimum results and this way your photos won't be rejected.

So as I said quality is the main determinating factor to avoid Photo rejection, so make sure that the images are not out of focus, and that the light balance is even. Also your photos may be too large in size, especially if you aiming at optimum quality, so my suggestion would be to use either Adobe Elements or Adobe Photoshop to reduce the sizing, as with this software the quality will not be affected. If you need to make an image larger, don't go over 5% as the quality will be reduced significantly.

Finally don't submit any image that has previously been rejected. It's better to take that shot again, but this time paying attention to the above guidelines, as this way your photos will hardly ever be rejected and your photos will make you a lot more money.
